Elegantly Thrown

After completing a good renovation, styling is what brings our property to life and expresses its true potential. Well-positioned plants, art on the walls and scattered cushions are all details without which, our property wouldn’t look at its best. It may sound superfluous to some, but us IDFP experts know better.

CUE the throw. Featured in many styled images and lifestyle magazines the throw is an important addition to the ‘soft-furnishing’ family, and just like cushions, throws are useful for our comfort but evermore chosen to match and support the styling and décor of our homes.

In fact it’s simply a smaller version of a blanket and its presence recalls memories of warmth, comfort and family cuddles in front of the TV. Yet, whether casually left on the sofa or carefully displayed at the foot of a bed, nowadays we pick with care which blanket we use.

Carefully chosen to complement the mood and colours of our living rooms they are there to suggest the feel of warmth and cosiness in winter, but also cool and bright feelings in summer. So, how do you choose the right throw for the styling of your living room, the bedroom, and the studio? Just like we do with our cushions, we choose the throws by colour and texture.

Colour first of all: you will choose a throw that contrasts but complements the bed or sofa it’s going to rest on, and it could also repeat a colour that features on an artwork or other styling and décor objects within the room. Throws, like cushions, reinforce the style of the home or the room and help suggest a mood or a season.

Texture: a strong texture will add interest to a room especially where most surfaces are smooth and shining, or where most fabrics are plain and neutral in hues.

Texture in fact can either be tactile [a pattern like a knitted surface] or visual [a strong motif like a two-coloured damask or stripes]. Textured fabrics will liven the mood of a room, which may otherwise have mostly smooth surfaces and plain fabrics for example. By the same token, avoiding pattern and designs will help moderate the styling of a room that already has strong decoration.

Whether left out neatly folded or apparently ‘thrown’ without any care, use your soft furnishings wisely and remember that by cleverly changing those small details around, you can easily change the feel you’re trying to convey. Always relate the throw and other soft furnishings back to the rest of the room and the furniture pieces they are placed upon. When aiming to profit from your property, choose your styling even more carefully as the aim is to hit that specific target market.

Tips

  • Add throws by complementing the colours within the space
  • Play with pattern/design to turn on or off the decorative ‘volume’ of the room
  • Choose light or thick fabric that’s adequate with the seasonSML
