How to get a DIY designer kitchen in 1 day

Few people have the luxury of an unlimited budget when it comes time to overhaul their kitchen – traditionally one of the most trade-intensive and hence expensive rooms to renovate.

For a total strip out and fit out, labour costs can spiral out of control once you’ve factored in a plumber, sparkie, carpenter, labourer, tiler… and possibly a builder to oversee the full renovation. And let’s not forget the stress of a kitchen out of action for weeks. When you’re Renovating For Profit, restrictive budgets and tight time frames are always the big enemies. So it’s important to really assess your renovation strategy when you’re planning your project.

Did you know there are three tiers of kitchen renovation?

The Basic Cosmetic Refresh: UNDER $1K

You’ve seen me do this before using really great specialty products like; tile paint, laminate paint, benchtop resurfacing kits, and by making simple changes to the door handles and window furnishings

Mid-Range: UNDER $5K

If your cabinets are in great condition but your doors are dated, this is a great option. Here you’ll replace the doors, drawer fronts and end panels only. Plus, make updates to your hardware, flooring, and appliances to bring the room up to date.

Brand New Kitchen: $15K +

Demolishing your kitchen and starting from scratch will cost you the big bucks and can head up to $50K+ … depending on your choice of finishes, materials, and appliances. It also involves the most trades and the most downtime. If you can avoid doing this on a quick cosmetic renovation, I would encourage it.

Here are some recent projects I’ve completed using Option 2. The results are outstanding and you’d never know that behind these doors, drawers and end panels, is the old original kitchen. You can update your benchtop and splash back to complete the look, and don’t be afraid to rejig the layout a bit and add flat pack cabinets where you need more storage, before ordering your new doors.

This kitchen (below), that I recently completed with the help of Sydney Doors, shows how you can get a designer look in just 1 day … perfect if your reno timeline is under the squeeze or you’re getting your property back on the market for rent or sale soon.

Here we used a contemporary two-tone scheme to update a tired 90s kitchen. The dark grey base cabinet doors really ground the space and the white uppers keep the room feeling open. Integrated handles keep the kitchen streamlined.

To add more bench space and storage, we shifted the fridge to the other side and purchased pantry flat-packs to sit either side of the fridge cavity. And where the fridge once was, a new base cabinet and benchtop off-cut complete the layout.

The most impressive thing about this makeover is that I was able to order all of my doors, drawer fronts and end panels online and they were shipped to me within 3 weeks of ordering. You can DIY the installation or have a chippie on hand for a day to help. You don’t even need to empty the food, pots, pans, and plates from your cabinets.

All the doors and panels were custom spray painted in beautiful, hard-wearing polyurethane in my colour choice. You can choose from a huge range of door profiles and thousands of colours from any paint manufacturer. You can really get a custom-designed look with a choice of satin, matte or gloss finish. Soft closing hinges, handles, wardrobe sliding door tracks and other accessories are available too from Sydney Doors.

The average cost to replace your kitchen doors, drawers and end panels like this ranges from $2.5K to $3K.

If you’re thinking of doing the same with your kitchen, Sydney Doors is offering a 5% discount to the Renovating For Profit community and they ship anywhere in Australia!
