Cherie Barber is a self-made multi-millionaire, full-time professional renovator, regular TV renovator and highly sought-after Australian public speaker. Born in an average working class family, Cherie grew up in Sydney’s western suburbs and was removed from school at the end of Year 10 to help her family make ends meet financially.
Cherie’s love of renovating stems from her childhood, where as a young child, she would spend hours sitting next to her dad on his earthmoving tractor. In 1991, aged 22, Cherie bought her first low budget, unrenovated property and cosmetically flipped it for a profit. During her twenties, she bought project number 2, a structural renovation which she completed whilst residing in the property and working full-time in marketing.
In 2002, Cherie quit her full-time job after completing her first professional renovation which saw her earn more money on the weekends renovating than her full-time employment.
Cherie's Early Projects
In the first year of her professional renovating career, Cherie bought 6 houses with a combined value of $6.2 million. She did this with no stable income, no job and little money behind her. With 20+ years renovating experience and over a decade as a full-time professional renovator, Cherie has personally renovated over 50 properties and been involved in countless property deals, well in excess of $50 million.
Cherie’s success is attributed to a disciplined, business-like approach to her property projects, complemented by a step-by-step system she personally created. She has extensive knowledge on property investment, renovation and development and is skilled at adding maximum value for the least possible cost. She has broken sales records in her suburbs and is skilled at creating the “wow factor” that gets owner-occupiers emotionally attached to a property, prior to purchase.
Cherie's Success & Accomplishments
Cherie’s expertise, knowledge and skills make her the favourite contributor for renovation related topics in the Australian media. She is constantly featured and has appeared across all major Australian television networks, live radio, and both national and suburban newspapers. She is into her 6th season as a regular TV cast member on Network TEN’s prime time lifestyle series, The Living Room, and is a regular guest expert on NINE’s Today show and Sky Business News’ Real Estate program. In light of her vast experience, she was dubbed “Australia’s Renovation Queen” by the Australian media. In February 2016, Cherie’s own TV show in the U.S.A, 5 Day Flip, launched on HGTV. In late 2016 she also became guest renovation mentor on Malaysia’s answer to The Block, called The Apartment.
Cherie was a finalist in two categories for the 2013 Telstra Business Woman of the Year awards. She is also a national brand ambassador for Asbestos Awareness and is passionate about educating home renovators across Australia how to renovate safely. She was honoured in 2016 as one of the Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence. Cherie established Renovating For Profit in 2009, a company designed to teach everyday people, the nuts and bolts of renovating as a profession. She has personally trained over 9,500 graduates since. Cherie believes once you have the right knowledge, anyone can do it!
If I had to sum up the most valuable thing Renovating For Profit can give you, it’s one word… FREEDOM. Financial freedom, freedom from the 9-5 grind and freedom to make your own choices.
